On Friday 14th November, I hosted an award ceremony for the Yarmouth Greats competition.
The evening was the culmination of the competition which began in May, with hundreds of local people casting their votes for their favourite businesses each month.
Held at the Zest Rooms in Hopton, the awards were compered by the BBC’s Nick Conrad and presented by myself and John Potter.
The competition was split into three categories: Tourist Attractions, Hospitality Venues and High Street Shops.
There were two awards for each category – Highly Commended and Winner. Along with a trophy, winners were presented with Splurge Cards, provided by Nigel Grimmer of local business, Splurge.
I would like to congratulate every single business that was nominated for one of these awards and, in particular, the winners. We have so many fantastic businesses in Great Yarmouth and these awards were a chance for residents to say thank you for all of the hard work that they do.
This competition has been entirely led by the public, so every business that was nominated is a winner as they have provided such good service that customers have taken the time to vote for them. I hope that local people will use these awards to discover new businesses in the area that they may not have tried before – just look out for the blue tag!

In June 1837 Garwood Burton Palmer opened a small drapery shop in Great Yarmouth Market Place. Now 177 years later, Palmers is still an independent business.
The Company has expanded its operations over the years and now employees over 350 staff. Located in the Market Place we have always prided ourselves on our wonderful window displays to encourage local customers and also tourists in to our store. Our buying team travel the length and breadth of the country in search of new merchandise to inspire our customers, whilst ensuring our prices are competitive. We are constantly reviewing our product offer and this year alone we have introduced over 10 new fashion brands including Superdry for Men, a new Gift Emporium and for the seasonal period a new Christmas department.
Being a family owned business we know that “Customer Service” is paramount and it is and always has been and always will be out policy to continue to excel in the level of customer service we offer.
Stars Nightclub is Great Yarmouth’s newest venue..The old Regent Theatre which originally opened December 1914 was designed by the architect Francis Burdett Ward and built by Crotch & Son. The building has in the past been a Theatre, a Cinema and a Mecca Bingo Hall. The new owners have restored the Grade II listed building to its former glory and it is now going to be operated as a Nightclub and Showbar.
The Kings Arms is an old hostelry with a modern outlook set in a conservation area of Northgate Street. Situated a stones throw away from the Market Place and adjacent to St Nicholas Minster, The Kings Arms has a large bar area with a small but cosy restaurant serving light snacks to home cooked favourites, along with burgers & steaks. It boasts a large award winning beer garden with a patio area for that cool drink in the sun or some alfresco dining. The Kings Arms strives on good honest service and value for money. There really is something for everyone so bring a friend, bring the family, you can even bring the dog and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the Kings Arms.
