On Friday 14th November, I hosted an award ceremony for the Yarmouth Greats competition.
The evening was the culmination of the competition which began in May, with hundreds of local people casting their votes for their favourite businesses each month.
Held at the Zest Rooms in Hopton, the awards were compered by the BBC’s Nick Conrad and presented by myself and John Potter.
The competition was split into three categories: Tourist Attractions, Hospitality Venues and High Street Shops.
There were two awards for each category – Highly Commended and Winner. Along with a trophy, winners were presented with Splurge Cards, provided by Nigel Grimmer of local business, Splurge.
I would like to congratulate every single business that was nominated for one of these awards and, in particular, the winners. We have so many fantastic businesses in Great Yarmouth and these awards were a chance for residents to say thank you for all of the hard work that they do.
This competition has been entirely led by the public, so every business that was nominated is a winner as they have provided such good service that customers have taken the time to vote for them. I hope that local people will use these awards to discover new businesses in the area that they may not have tried before – just look out for the blue tag!

With the overwhelming popularity of local MP Brandon Lewis’ Yarmouth Greats campaign, over forty certificates have today been sent out to businesses in the area.
The campaign, which invites local residents to vote for their favourite high street shop, tourist attraction or hospitality venue, has been so popular that another 40 certificates have been sent to the nominated businesses.
Over sixty businesses have now been nominated, the full list of which may be seen by clicking here.
Brandon said: “every time I visit a business that has been nominated I am reminded of how many great companies and owners we have in Great Yarmouth. Whether it is a store, a venue or a place to eat and drink I am excited by just how many are offering such superb service and great products to people in Great Yarmouth. They are well deserving of our recognition and thanks and I would encourage people to check out these great businesses and visit them.
“The popularity of this competition is a testament to the special place our local businesses have in the hearts of residents. These companies go above and beyond what is expected and this shines through the comments made by each and every comment made. If you haven’t nominated a business yet, head to www.yarmouthgreats.com and encourage your friends and family to do the same!”
